As many of you may know, SEPTA will take a leap forward in fare collection sometime in 2015 by introducing a new electronic "FareKey" card, similar to the type used in the Washington DC area Metro. Which raises the question, "How about those over 65 who now use paper SEPTA passes?" SEPTA promises it will be reaching out to seniors well in advance of the switch. But, in a nutshell, anyone with a paper SEPTA ID card will have 2 options: either swipe your PA driver's license or non-driver ID in a turnstile, or go to SEPTA Customer Service and get a senior-version FareKey which will also serve as a photo ID. It appears the Senior FareKey will be permanently loaded. To use it, the holder would simply tap the card against a new card reader attached to fareboxes on buses subways and trolleys. The FareKey rollout for commuter rail is coming in 2016. For more information, follow this link: http://www.septa.org/key/faq.html The timing of the changeover is unclear.
